Cupcakes, Candy, Cookies...Oh MY!

I started this post the week after Easter, with Spring in the air. Well, here is it weeks away from summer and I never finished it! Safe to say the past few months were a little busy. So here is my spring time post...as little late. Better late than never right?

Spring time is one of my very favorite times of the year. Spring means outdoors, flowers, warm temps, sun shiny days, and my very favorite holiday....EASTER! I love being reminded of the sacrifice my Savior made for us and celebrating the greatest miracle in history, His death and resurrection! Along with that, my children enjoy the secular side of it all...egg hunts, bunny rabbits, and WAY too many sweets.

Anytime a holiday comes around, there is a reason to party at daycare. The kids get special treats and sent home with a bag FULL of candy. (Because that is just how we want to pick up our children from daycare...hopped up on sugar with some to-go!) With an allergy kid, the simple holiday party can turn into a production. I am BLESSED beyond measure with a small daycare and loving teachers who always want to ensure my baby boy doesn't miss out on anything. My daycare sends a list out to the parents of what the child needs to bring. There are a few things my daycare does for Jace to make sure he isn't left out.

I always bring the cupcakes. By having me as the cupcake provider, I can ensure there are cupcakes for everyone that he is allowed to eat. And yes that means homemade cupcakes (at 10:00pm the night before after you've worked 9 hours, worked at church another 3, and made sure kids were in bed before you started). No running to the corner bakery and grabbing the ready made from the counter! Luckily, I love to bake and cupcakes bake quickly. Be on the lookout for a separate post for #jaceapproved cupcakes!

For the other snacks, they usually list cookies and chips/pretzels. They try to specify for the cookies to be Oreo®. These are on the #jaceapproved list of snacks; not only does he love them but what kid doesn't?! Plain chips and pretzels are also on the list. By specifying the snacks, he doesn't feel left out of the party.

Finally, with any party, comes CANDY! This particular party was Easter which meant an egg hunt. Each child is required to bring a certain number of eggs. They hide and find them all, then the teachers sort the eggs to give each child an equal number. This year, I did something a little different. I labeled all of Jace's eggs with his name. His eggs had candy inside that he could eat. The teacher taped all the eggs so the kids couldn't open them, then made sure he had his eggs to bring home. It seems picky, but have you tried to take an egg with candy out of the hand of a two year old? Not a pleasant adventure... Something that was special to me this year was his teacher. She stopped me the day before the party and asked what exactly could he have. She bought candy herself to ensure his basket was full of stuff he could eat. It is the little things that make such a difference to me. The other thing we learned this year was how different packages of the same brand could be different. My mother-in-law buys treats for the kiddos and noticed it with Peeps®. I'm teaching my family members the importance of label reading!

All of these things seem like small things, but to an allergy child who doesn't understand, they are big things and could be life saving things. I am thankful for family, friends, and a daycare who go above and beyond to make my little boy feel included in the fun!
